Down 3 lbs

It took way too long to see movement on that scale. But I’m down 3 lbs now. Going for 10 in total as my first little goal. I have drastically changed my movement since I started this- walking over 10,000 steps a day really helps. So far I noticed a change with energy and mood. It is very hard to keep going when the scale stays the same but I’m trying to change my feelings about that.

At the beginning of a weight loss journey, the body undergoes several changes that can be both physical and psychological. Understanding these changes can help set realistic expectations and foster perseverance.

Physical Changes

1. Water Weight Loss: In the initial stages of weight loss, most individuals experience a significant loss of water weight. This is often due to dietary adjustments, such as reduced carbohydrate intake, which can lead to decreased glycogen stores in the muscles and liver. Since glycogen is stored with water, its depletion prompts rapid weight loss on the scale.
2. Increased Energy Levels: As the body adjusts to a healthier diet and more regular physical activity, many people report an increase in energy levels. Improved nutrition fuels the body more efficiently, helping to combat feelings of fatigue.
3. Muscle Gain and Fat Loss: Depending on the nature of the exercise regimen, individuals may start to build muscle while losing fat. This can lead to a change in body composition that might not always reflect on the scale, as muscle is denser than fat.
4. Metabolism Adjustment: Initially, the metabolism may slow down as the body adapts to a caloric deficit. Over time, however, with consistent exercise and a balanced diet, the metabolism can rev up, aiding further weight loss.
5. Skin Changes: Some individuals may notice changes in their skin, which can include increased elasticity as they lose weight or potential breakouts as the body detoxifies.

Psychological Changes

1. Increased Confidence: Many individuals experience a boost in self-esteem during the early stages of weight loss as they start to see changes in their appearance. This newfound confidence can encourage further commitment to the journey.
2. Mood Variability: Fluctuations in mood can occur as the body adjusts to dietary changes and physical activity. Hormonal changes from weight loss and exercise may lead to moments of irritability or emotional swings.
3. Mindful Eating Habits: Many people become more aware of their eating habits during the initial phase. This mindfulness can lead to better choices and a healthier relationship with food.
4. Goal Setting and Motivation: Setting small, achievable goals becomes crucial. The initial weight loss successes can act as motivation to continue pursuing larger goals.
Understanding these changes can aid in mentally preparing for the journey ahead, allowing individuals to embrace the process. Recognizing the initial shifts in both body and mind can foster a more positive outlook and promote long-term success in weight loss endeavors.
